February 2007
Counselor’s Corner
In the month of
February, we are going to be doing a school
wide anti-bullying unit. The students will
talk about bullying in Tribes and in
classroom guidance classes. We are teaching
the students that teasing and bullying are a
reflection of the SENDER, NOT the RECEIVER.
In other words, when one feels badly about
himself, he might treat others badly to
bring others down to his level. So, we try
to not believe what that person is saying,
and can actually feel sorry for him or her.
When we feel good about ourselves, we try to
make others feel good, too. We will also
brainstorm ways to handle bullies:
- Try very hard
not to react.
- Talk to an
adult.
- Come up with a
plan for the next time.
- Don’t believe
what they are saying.
Very frequently
students come into my office and talk
through their problems with other
students. I can provide a
non-threatening environment for
successful peer mediation. Because the
students at EIS are together for so many
years, it is important to get these
issues addressed and stopped, so they
can be happy and comfortable at school.
If your child is having a recurring
problem with another student or group of
students, please encourage them to come
and talk to me, or feel free to call if
you are concerned that they are being
bullied, or even if they are having
“issues” with another student. Our
sincere hope is that no child at EIS is
feeling intimidated or put-down while
they are at school. Please let us know,
so we can help!
