Counselor's Corner

In Tribes during January, students and teachers will be discussing the lifeskills of effort, goal-setting, courage, and flexibility. One of the first steps in goal setting is getting organized. Many students need to be taught step-by-step how to be organized. This would be a good time to organize a place at home for homework, library books, backpacks, etc. Ask them if their desk and locker is organized. Spend some family time at home discussing everyone’s goals for this year. Writing them down and sharing them with others helps us to be accountable.

I am excited about some projects we will be starting in 2005.
Peggy Moss and I will be attending a Schools Attuned program in January. “Attuning” a student involves addressing an individual’s neurodevelopmental and academic strengths and weaknesses in order to contribute to his or her success. I will also be starting Second Step: A Violence Prevention Program with Kindergarten, First, and Second grade classes. In this curriculum, students will learn empathy, anger management, and social problem solving. We will also be starting a mother/daughter book club for Fifth Graders to discuss the book Odd Girl Out-The Hidden Aggression in Girls, by Rachel Simmons. Our first meeting will be Friday, January 28th at 8:05. We will have Muffins with Mom, introduce the book, and dismiss the girls to class while we discuss the book.

Finally, after focusing on community service in December, the students at EIS have voted, and they have chosen to adopt an animal shelter. We are collecting old towels, shoe boxes, kitten and puppy food, shower rings, chew toys, and rawhide bones for the city animal shelter.
