September 2006
Counselor’s Corner
Welcome! We are so excited about this school
year. My, how they’ve grown! I’m looking
forward to working with your children this
year. If you have been in Tulsa Public
Schools, you are familiar with the Tribes
curriculum, which we will continue this
year. Tribes in an integral part of the
Tulsa Model, which is the framework for
school improvement and student success. This
curriculum includes Seven Community
Guidelines: Mutual Respect, Attentive
Listening, Truthfulness, Trustworthiness,
Appreciations/No Put Downs, Right to Pass,
and Personal Best. Each week, the student
will meet with their “tribe”. The tribe will
be made up of one staff member and around 10
other students of different ages (3rd
through 5th). On Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday mornings, the school will follow
the Tribes curriculum, which teaches the
Community Guidelines. They will have small
group discussions involving character, and
they will do a variety of community-building
activities.
In September, Tribes will be discussing
Mutual Respect and Attentive Listening. By
learning about Mutual Respect, the students
will learn how to honor individual and
cultural values, beliefs, and needs. It also
includes respect for others, including
personal property, and individual
differences, talents, and contributions.
This year has gotten off to a great start!
Feel free to call me if you have any
concerns that could affect your child’s
success this year!
